How to Make Washing Soda

Learning how to make washing soda is a DIY of DIY projects! I say this because, like vinegar, I use it in many other DIY cleaning solutions.

Many of the DIY recipes that you see here call for washing soda. I had never heard of it before I started making my own products. And then it was hard to find. Little did I know that I could make my own!

How to Make Washing Soda

Washing soda, also known as Sodium Carbonate, is a staple in many home cleaning products. It's a combination of sodium, carbon, and oxygen. You can get it commercially or you can make it yourself. It is a very simple and inexpensive process!

Equipment

  • a large cookie sheet
  • an oven

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Pour a layer of baking soda onto the cookie sheet. You'll want it about half an inch thick. It's hard to give an exact amount because cookie sheets vary in size. Just use the one you have.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  3. "Bake" the baking soda for about an hour or two, stirring every so often. You'll know it's done when it changes from the sandy, fluid feel of baking soda to the softer, grainier texture of washing soda. The baking soda needs to heat completely to 400°f for the chemical reaction to take place.
  4. Once that happens, turn off the oven and let it cool before transferring to an airtight container.

There you go, washing soda that's quick and easy to make! Now you never need to worry about where to get it or running out!

Now that you know how to make washing soda, what is your next DIY project? Maybe homemade liquid laundry detergent!
