Thanksgiving traditions
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade goes all the way back to its debut in 1924 when it began its original route kicking off at the intersection of 145th Street and Convent Avenue in New York City. In 2020, it's facing a challenge unprecedented in its 94 years, with the coronavirus pandemic making large crowds dangerous. In fact, it'll be vastly different this year; there'll be no audience and parade participants will be drastically reduced for a TV-only event. But it's faced some more pedestrian challenges through the years, too. When you're dealing with giant balloons, intricate ground floats, performances, huge crowds, and live television, anything and everything can go wrong. Here are some of the funniest mishaps from the parade's long history. And this year, with "specialty vehicles" replacing the throngs of people usually holding the massive balloons, we'll see if that makes things go more or less smoothly!
